Everyone loves robots that do household chores and activities for you. Take the Roomba vacuum robot, for example: it's compact and smart. That said, it looks like the Roomba will be losing cool points to Moneual's Rydis H800, a robot designed to silently hunt out and conquer foul odors and other impurities in the air.

Rydis H800 works by simply detecting a polluted area, travelling to it, and the then sucking up the impurities--be it dust, cigarette smoke, or other stenches. Once it's finished in that area, it will then go search for another spot in need of fresh air.

Naturally, the robot contains a location detection sensor and mapping system, plus a five-step air filtration system. This means that once the Rydis has located the bad air, it will suck the air through a range of filters such as HEPA, dust, deodorizing, and impregnated activated carbon filters, to make sure no impurities remain.

This looks like a great machine if you happen to suffer from asthma or dust allergies, or if you just want your home to consistently smell daisy-fresh. The downside is that the battery will only last for around four and a half hours of patrolling before it will need to retreat (which it will do by itself) and recharge, so pick your odor-hunting times wisely.

Unfortunately, neither the price nor availability information for this robotic air purifier are on the Rydis or Monueal websites yet, so you'll have to be content with watching the Roomba circulate the floors for now.

While communicating with the person, the 111-kilogramme (244-pound) robot picked up tomato sauce from the refrigerator with four fingers and carried it with a piece of bread on a plate to the dining table.

The robot was developed by Tokyo's elite Waseda University and named Twendy-One, an acronym derived from Waseda Engineering Designed Symbiont.

After a month of rehearsals, the 30kg robots appeared alongside the theatre company Seinendan in the production Hataraku Watashi (I, Worker) which tells a futuristic tale of a housekeeping robot who becomes bored with its allotted role in society as a demeaning cleaner.

During the 20-minute performance, the two lead canary yellow robots faultlessly delivered their lines while interacting with their real-life counterparts.

The team behind the performance, which took place at Osaka University and was penned by playwright Oriza Hirata, are hoping to expand it to full production length for the public by 2010.

The alliance between humans and robots performing together live on stage is believed to be a first for Japan's robotics industry.

The Wakamaru robot uses a laser and cameras to track and identify objects and people. It also has the capacity to remember and recognise around 10,000 words necessary for communication in daily life.

Japan has long been a pioneer in robotic technology. While the Japanese robotics market is currently valued at an estimated £4.9 billion (Y712.3billion), this is forecast to boom to £66billion (Y9.63 trillion) by 2030, according to the Japan Robot Association.

From care assistance for the elderly to replacement of factory workers via all-singing tap-dancing household entertainers, the robotics industry is poised to break into a growing number of sectors.

Crazy pictures from Japan show a nearly 60ft tall life-size RX-78-2 Gundam robot. Apparently, this statue was made for the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam (Thanks for the comment, Panda) and will only be up for about two months. People have indicated that this is the location of the humongous robot. Word so far is that the rocket packs are NOT operable. What a relief.

I swear to god, with my robot obsession, you'd swear I was Japanese. They're the only culture crazed over bots enough to hold me, much less contain me. I'd fit right in — if I weren't 6'3" and teeming with 'merican nationalist spirit. But still, the Japanese deserve the credit for merging automotive culture with the ultra-futuristic robotic stuff. Japan is a world leader in robotics, and in October 2008 a Japanese company will become the first in the world to begin mass-producing a robot that assists humans in moving their limbs. A research team led by University of Tsukuba Professor Sankai Yoshiyuki has developed the device, which is called Robot Suit HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) TM. Sankai is the CEO of Cyberdyne Inc., the company that plans to begin making this robot suit available for rental through sales outlets.

How the Robot Suit Works

Assistive limbs have been out for sime time now, the US Army had their own Assistive Suit that is still under development. This video is showing us a Japanese researcher explaining his own innovation. It looks comfortable to wear I just have my doubts on how effecient it is on picking up signals from the surface of your skin to go in synchro with your movements.
Manufacturing robots and realistic humanoid robots are just two of the numerous kinds of robots that are already in use. A robot suit is a wearable device that dramatically increases the strength of the wearer. Robot Suit HAL is worn over the arms and legs and assists body movement through eight electric motors attached to shoulders, elbows, knees, and the waist.

As it supports the wearer's own limb movements, the robot suit must detect how the wearer is trying to move his or her arms and legs and quickly respond. Most of the robots that have been developed so far in this field rely on sensors to detect motion and then activate motors.

This method, however, has some drawbacks. First, there is a slight time lag from when the wearer moves a muscle to when the robot responds. Second, people who are unable to move their arms and legs can't use such a robot at all. These issues had been viewed as obstacles to a wide commercialization of robot suits. Robot Suit HAL, however, has overcome these limitations using a unique method that senses bioelectric signals sent from brain, rather than detecting muscle movements.

When you want to move your body, your brain sends out an electric signal that is received by your muscles, which then contract, thus producing motion. This electric signal travels to the muscles via the body's nerves, generating a slight voltage of electricity on the surface of the skin. This is known as a bioelectric signal, and Robot Suit HAL detects them using the sensors placed around the wearer's body. Depending on the voltage running the surface of the skin, the computer inside Robot Suit HAL analyzes the signal and sets the appropriate motors in motion.

A Variety of Potential Uses

This unique method of operation means that a person can control Robot Suit HAL by his or her own will, even if he or she is unable to actually move. And as the suit detects the signal sent from the brain even before it gets to the muscle, it can move an instant before the muscle does

When a person wearing Robot Suit HAL picks up an object that weighs 40 kg, he/she feels as if it weighed only a few kilograms. Robot Suit HAL is therefore expected to have a wide range of applications, such as assisting carers, helping people with physical disabilities to move, and assisting people performing jobs that require a great deal of physical strength. In order to facilitate the commercialization process, Professor Sankai and others formed Cyberdyne Inc. in 2004. In October 2008, the company plans to move into a factory currently under construction that will allow them to manufacture up to 500 suits a year.

Several other types of robot suits are also under development in Japan. Toyama Shigeki, a Professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, leads a team that is currently developing a power-assist suit, which will be used to help agricultural work. Their goal is to place the product on the market within the next few years. The HRP-4C robot is unveiled at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology outside Tokyo. The Japanese researchers showed off the humanoid that will soon strut her stuff down a Tokyo catwalk.

The girlie-faced humanoid with slightly oversized eyes, a tiny nose and shoulder-length hair boasts 42 motion motors programmed to mimic the movements of flesh-and-blood fashion models.

"Hello everybody, I am cybernetic human HRP-4C," said the futuristic fashionista, opening her media premiere at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology outside Tokyo.

The fashion-bot is 158 centimetres (five foot two inches) tall, the average height of young Japanese women, but weighs in at a waif-like 43 kilograms (95 pounds) -- including batteries.

Hamming it up before photographers and television crews, the seductive cyborg struck poses, flashed smiles and pouted sulkily according to commands transmitted wirelessly from journalists via bluetooth devices.

The performance fell short of flawless when she occasionally mixed up her facial expressions -- a mistake the inventors put down to a case of the nerves as a hail of camera shutters confused her sound recognition sensors.

She has a slightly manga-inspired human face but a silver metallic body.

"If we had made the robot too similar to a real human, it would have been uncanny," said one of the inventors, humanoid research leader Shuji Kajita. "We have deliberately leaned toward an anime style."

The institute said the robot "has been developed mainly for use in the entertainment industry" but is not for sale at the moment.

"We unveiled this to attract attention in society," said Junji Ito, a senior official at the institute, who said he saw the HRP-4C as a stepping stone toward creating a humanoid industry.

"It's important that people feel good about humanoids and want to work with them," he said. "We shifted from a dry mechanical image to a very human image."

The preview was a warm-up for the robot's appearance at a Tokyo fashion show on March 23.

Like her real-life counterparts, HRP-4C commands a hefty price -- the institute said developing and building her cost more than 200 million yen (two million dollars).

Hirohisa Hirukawa, another researcher, said the institute hoped to commercialise the humanoid in future.

The core model would retail at around 200,000 dollars -- not including the cost of her outer shell or whatever designer labels she may be wearing.

Nanofly Customs The model robot

This robot model was completely scratch built for a customer to his exact specifications. The model was designed in a 3D computer program and renderings were sent to me as a guide to build the model. The main body is made from two 6" Plastruct hemispheres.
Urethane resin castings of scratch built master patterns were employed to create most of the other main parts like the feet, legs, arms and thrusters. Finishing details were made from sheet styrene, copper and brass tubing and aluminum rods. By complete coincidence, a small plastic lens robbed from a disposable camera was a perfect fit for the "eye" of the Robot model.
The "Nanofly" name was a decal produced by JBOT which has mirror like gold foil applied. The model was sprayed with specially mixed metallic automotive laquers and given a semigloss clear coat to match the look of the original computer generated renderings.
